{"id":2468,"date":"2016-06-06T13:38:14","date_gmt":"2016-06-06T13:38:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/asi2.wpenginepowered.com\/uncategorized\/american-apparels-dov-charney-were-not-going-bankrupt\/"},"modified":"2025-06-25T12:55:25","modified_gmt":"2025-06-25T16:55:25","slug":"american-apparels-dov-charney-were-not-going-bankrupt","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/asicentral.com\/press-releases\/american-apparels-dov-charney-were-not-going-bankrupt\/","title":{"rendered":"American Apparel\u2019s Dov Charney: We&#8217;re Not Going Bankrupt&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: center;\" align=\"center\"><strong><i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\"><span style=\"color: black; font-weight: normal; mso-bidi-font-weight: bold;\">In exclusive interview with <\/span><\/i><\/strong><strong><span style=\"color: black; font-weight: normal; mso-bidi-font-weight: bold;\">Counselor<i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">, <\/i><\/span><\/strong><strong><i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\"><span style=\"color: black; font-weight: normal; mso-bidi-font-weight: bold;\">CEO<\/span><\/i><\/strong><strong><i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\"><span style=\"color: black; font-weight: normal; mso-bidi-font-weight: bold;\"> says 1<sup>st<\/sup> quarter ad specialty sales are up <\/span><\/i><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt;\">TREVOSE<\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt;\">, <\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt;\">PA<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt;\"> \u2013 <\/span><b style=\"mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt;\">April 5, 2011<\/span><\/b><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt;\"> \u2013 American Apparel <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt;\">CEO<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt;\"> and majority stockholder Dov Charney in an exclusive interview with <i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">Counselor <\/i>magazine said the company would not go bankrupt and that reports the company is unstable are inaccurate.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt;\">\u201cFirst of all, the announcement about us possibly seeking bankruptcy protection is something we did as an obligation to shareholders to explain that it\u2019s a possibility, however remote,\u201d said Charney, who founded American Apparel. \u201cIn reality, to say that the company is unstable is not accurate.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt;\">In light of recent reports that American Apparel is in financial trouble, Charney told <i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">Counselor<\/i> Senior Editor Michele Bell that while the company suffered net losses of $86.3 million in 2010, its ad specialties sales were only down 1%. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt;\">Charney, who rarely gives interviews, reached out to shed light on his unconventional company and his role in it. He said the company\u2019s ad specialty sales for the first quarter of 2011 are up, and that he sees a very positive trend in the sale of wholesale merchandise to the ad specialty industry. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt;\">\u201cThings are healthier this year than last year, across the board,\u201d Charney said. \u201cWe had difficulties last year in the manufacturing process because we had to change over the workers,\u201d he said, referring to an immigration inspection last year that caused the company to replace employees who appeared not to be authorized to work in the <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt;\">U.S.<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt;\"> Now with 12,000 employees, the majority of which work in <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt;\">Los Angeles<\/span> <span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt;\">County<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt;\">, Charney said that his workforce has produced more than enough inventory for the season and that American Apparel\u2019s commitment to the ad specialty industry is stronger than ever. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt;\">\u201cThere\u2019s no chance this industry has to worry about me, or American Apparel, leaving,\u201d Charney told <i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">Counselor<\/i>. \u201cI\u2019ve been producing and selling T-shirts in this industry for more than 20 years and I\u2019m not going anywhere. American Apparel will be producing T-shirts 20 years from now, I assure you.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt;\">Charney said<i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\"> <\/i>his company has over 14 million garments in its <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt;\">Los Angeles<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt;\"> warehouse ready to ship. \u201cThe \u2018can do\u2019 entrepreneurial spirit that I love about this industry is alive and well, and we feel it\u2019s very important for us to be successful as a \u2018Made in the <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt;\">USA<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt;\">\u2019 producer to the incredible ad specialty industry,\u201d he said. \u201cYes, we got hurt a little bit with the cotton prices, but that\u2019ll subside. American Apparel and I are survivors.
